What is an anabolic steroid?

Anabolic steroids are related in structure to the naturally occurring steroid, testosterone (see here). Anabolic steroids are able to stimulate tissue growth, particularly muscle tissue growth, and are often used to treat muscle wasting disorders. They can increase muscle mass and strength.
